Can one be a Catholic atheist? How about famous author George Santayana? Rationally one can contend that the religion they were raised on is important to carry out specific traditions and social ceremonies despite that their personal ideologies on God don't mesh well with the the institution's suggested portrayal. Or perhaps that there are inherent reasons to agree with the moral positions it holds. I'd like to add though that it's insulting for people like the previous poster who goes by "Lewis Blakely" to make statements to the effect that he can't have his cake and eat it too, but with a juvenile twist that reeks of sentiment found in prepubescent cliques.
As for myself, I'm an ex-Catholic atheist who doesn't feel guilty for the disassociation-partly because of people like Blakely. There are other reasons as well, but those would certainly exceed the length of a casual post.

glenn,i know what you mean.christians, for the first 300+yearsAD(CE)were classified as athiest because they disengaged from the local religions and gods but remained embedded in local cultures, their natural environment after all.Paul the apostle tried to help by preaching "the Unknown God" without doing a lewis blakely on the followers of the other gods.in the light of this insight, short answer, yesbut prefer other label for security reasons.bobmaguire.

Glenn,
Are you for real??? Atheist Catholic? Atheist means you do not believe there is a God. The term Catholic means several things, one of which is "of or supporting the Catholic Church, or the Roman Catholic Church." If you support the Church, which is all about God in three Persons, how could you at the same time be an Atheist? Being Catholic is not a culture in and of itself. It is a religious system...it has specific beliefs, and that includes following the Commandments, including #1, thou shalt not have other "gods" besides me....Glenn, God is part of the Catholic Church, get over your delusional attitude. Read the Bible and especially the Gospels. You are apparently trying to do your will and what you want and not the will of God the Father.

Hi Cam, I was wondering if you would be able to ask Father Bob a question for me the next time you get together. My question basically is whether or not Father Bob thinks it is possible to be an Atheist Catholic.

For example, it is pretty much accepted that you can be an Atheist Jew, as being a Jew is considered cultural heritage as much if not more than purely a religion. The Catholic Church has many people who grew up with in it and hence they have a cultural heritage that is Catholic, however many of these people end up leaving the Church because of religious beliefs, and these people become fallen Catholics. Perhaps the Church could keep more people in the west if they positioned being Catholic as cultural rather than purely religious. So would it be possible to be an Atheist Catholic?
