Hey Bob and Michaela,
Great to hear you both again. I always find listening to you guys very encouraging. As I’m doing work that’s somewhat similar to Bob it can often feel like I’m shovelling jelly with a pitchfork, so believe it or not it’s encouraging to hear Bob feel the same was sometimes. Working with volunteers can be particularly frustrating. Lots of people thinking what you are doing is great but very few actually putting up their hands to be involved.
I think it’s usually always going to be easier to run a program that does not involve volunteers, but the point of volunteers, for me, it’s to give mr or ms average person a chance to get their hands dirty and help out in a meaningful way. I think this is just as important as the help we give. I heard someone once say that revolutions always came from the middle class. I don’t think things will change for the poor just because the poor and a few paid professionals complain, it’ll change because the middle class complain because they’ve seen it first hand – and volunteering is a great place to do that. Anyway you’ve got me ranting, thanks again for the show and the encouragement it gives me. By the way Bob I know you see yourself as the monkey and Safran as the organ grinder but you have become funnier and funnier over the last year or so and, in my humble opinion relegated Safran to monkey.

chris, yes to all you’ve said, leaving aside the Safran bit but I’ll have to chip in a bit more on the 3jjj programme or become redundant.I was at the launch of an after school programme for a mix of local housing ministry/other kids just last night, churches together with council, local state member, local businesses and the salt of the earth, volunteers!bobmaguire.

Hey Bob,
Have you ever read any of Sister Joan chittister? Also did you get my question about I heart huckabees and the relational matrix from a few weeks ago. It was…
Bob, I’m still trying to understand “the relational matrix”. Can you please watch the film “I Heart Huckabees” (it’s on DVD so you can hire it) and tell me is the relational matrix the same as “the blanket” in the film.
Thanks!
Chris
